Galeri’s kitchen closed until further notice

With regret, we are having to close the kitchen with immediate effect as we (as a company) review our operations.

As with several other hospitality businesses, there have been staffing issues and opening hours/patterns have been and remain problematic and challenging to say the least. We are therefore consulting with staff as to whether we can operate and run the kitchen ourselves as a company.

The consultation with the staff will take place until Wednesday, 29.09.21. Until this date, the kitchen will remain closed. The Café Bar service (drinks/cakes) will remain operational.

We thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we deal with this sensitive issue.

Testing, Testing 123

With Welsh Government removing the regulations on social distancing and capacity for events, as the majority of venues, theatres and concert halls across Wales – Galeri are part of the “Testing, Testing 123” campaign.

The campaign focuses on asking audiences to, where possible conduct a Lateral Flow Test before visiting Galeri. As staff, we will be testing twice a week as part of our measures to protect ourselves, co-workers, audiences and performers.

The audience in the theatre will be required, by law in Wales to wear a face covering throughout the performance.

Testing, Testing 123 is a campaign coordinated by Creu Cymru.

Slight changes to Galeri’s Covid procedures

From Monday, 16.08.21 – we will be making slight adjustments to our Covid procedures.

The changes are:

We will not be taking your temperature when visiting Galeri.

The way we collect personal information for Test, Trace & Protect. Rather than collect on arrival, customers in the Café Bar will be asked to fill in an information slip on your table (name | email | time of arrival). We will have customer information for all cinema ticket holders through the ticketing system.

Cinema audiences will leave the screen(s) out back to the cinema foyer, walking past the kiosk, down the stairs and exit the building, onto Doc Victoria. Staff will be on hand to show you the way.

The seating capacity in the cinema will increase (from Friday | 20.08.21) as we change from 2 metre social distancing seat-plans to 1 metre seating. We will continue to offer some screenings using our 2 metre social distancing seat-plans. This change is following audience feedback since re-opening the cinema. A minimum of two seats will be separating every group/individual on each row for the 1 metre social distancing seat plan.

Everyone attending Galeri must still:

  • Wear a face covering when walking around the building (until seated in the Café Bar, Cinema or theatre)
  • Maintain social distancing
  • Follow our one-way system
  • Use the hand sanitising stations located around the building

No immediate changes in Galeri

Following today’s announcement by Mark Drakeford on further relaxations in Wales from Saturday, 07.08.21 – there will be no immediate changes to our operations here in Galeri.

We will be reviewing the new guidelines and take into consideration audience/customer feedback before implementing any changes.

In simple terms, this means you will still be required to:

  • share your contact details on arrival – for Test, Trace & Protect purposes
  • wear a face covering when walking around the building
  • follow the one-way system around the building
  • maintain social distancing
  • pre-order tickets online
  • order food/drink using table service in the Café Bar

Our covid measures and answers to FAQ can be found here

Whilst we fully respect and appreciate other businesses might be changing their systems immediately, we will be doing so on our terms and in our own time.

We kindly ask that you respect the rules, our staff, fellow customers and audience members during your visit to Galeri.

Be kind

We ask everyone to respect fellow audience members and staff as we re-open the cinema tomorrow (Friday, 23.07.21).

Over recent weeks, several hospitality businesses have shared disturbing stories highlighting the lack of respect and aggressiveness towards staff.

We are not responsible for the rules/guidelines – we only implement these as instructed by law from Welsh Government to ensure the safety of everyone (audiences, customers and staff). We will not tolerate any threatening or abusive behaviour towards anyone here in Galeri.

Please be patient and respect the rules, your fellow audience members and staff.

Tickets will be on-sale (online only) from 11:00 on Wednesday, 14.07.21.

Due to the current guidelines with regards to social distancing, we have specific seat-plans for each screening. We appreciate this isn’t a perfect system, but we expect the capacity to be increased over the coming weeks as Welsh Government relax the guidelines.

The programme, schedule, guidelines and further information can be found on

Whilst we are operating the limited capacity seat-plans, we are unable to offer the PRIMA discounts to members.

Re-opening the cinema (update)

Although cinemas are now permitted to open in Wales (since 17.05.21), unfortunately, due to the reduced capacity and the rules/guidelines it isn’t financially viable for us to re-open the cinema here in Galeri.

We hope the situation will improve allowing us to re-open at some stage in June, but we do not have any firm date set at the moment.

We will issue an update later in May. In the meantime, we do have an option for audiences to enjoy a range of films at home. Galeri will receive a financial contribution every time a film is rented as part of our “watch at home” programme.

Re-opening Galeri (update)

We are receiving a lot of enquiries asking when Galeri will re-open to the public.

Although outdoor hospitality (food/drink) will be allowed to open in Wales from Monday, 26 April - we will not be in a position to do so due to our limited capacity outside and costs associated with opening.

Our aim is to re-open the Cafe Bar when indoor hospitality will be permitted. There is currently no official date set for this by Welsh Government, so we will provide an update once this information is to hand.

The same applies for the re-opening of the theatre/events, cinema and meeting rooms – we have no information as to when Welsh Government will allow us to re-open. As soon as the Government review and allow us to re-open further, we will review the guidelines and announce our plans.

During the lockdown, resident companies and artists taking part in Gofod Creu will be allowed to work from their units in Galeri.

Welsh Government will review and update the guidelines in mid-January. We will then announce our plans to re-open the building, Cafe Bar and events moving forward.

23.10.20 Arts Council of Wales Cultural Recovery Fund

Rhaglen Sinema

Galeri Caernarfon Cyf are delighted to announce that we have been successful in our application for financial support from the Welsh Government and the Arts Council of Wales, as part of the Wales Cultural Recovery Fund.

The fund was primarily a rescue and recovery package with the main aim of securing jobs and the survival of the arts sector in Wales.

Before the pandemic, Galeri had a strong and unique business model. The venue was thriving and welcoming over 250,000 through the doors annually, providing a varied events/cinema programme attracting audiences from a wide geographical area with a wider economic benefit locally.

Galeri historically receives 15% of the required funds to operate by way of grant, with the remaining 85% being generated commercially (Café Bar, ticket sales, rent etc). COVID-19 effectively wiped out all the commercial income overnight without knowing when we would be able to re-open, what the situation would be when we were to re-open. This immediate and total loss of commercial income put the whole future of Galeri and the jobs it supported at a risk.

This financial lifeline will allow Galeri to:

  • Safeguard all jobs and stop the redundancy consultation process;
  • Engage with audiences, artists, companies and partners;
  • Provide opportunities for artists/creatives to make use of Galeri’s facilities to develop their work;
  • Plan and implement an events programme over the short and longer term;
  • Carry out essential maintenance and repair work within the building.

According to Gwyn Roberts, Galeri’s CEO:
“This funding is a lifeline for us and means that we can continue to operate through the rest of the financial year to the end of March 2021. Without this funding, Galeri would have closed in December with no certainty as to what would happen thereafter.

Without the commercial income coming in and with the furlough scheme coming to an end, we had no option but to begin the redundancy consultation process with our staff. This funding will bring this process to an immediate end and will secure the jobs of almost 50 members of staff.

It is now possible for us to plan for the re-opening of Galeri in stages. This will include carrying out research, talking to audiences and perspective audiences, working with artists and companies to develop a new programme of events to hopefully begin during Spring. We are aiming to re-open the cinema from December”.

We would like to publicly thank the community locally and nationally for their patience and support over the last eight months. The kind messages and financial contributions have been gratefully received and shows the importance of Galeri and the arts here in this area.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Galeri following the lock-down and as we continue to gradually re-open different elements of Galeri over the coming months.

In the meantime, stay safe.

21.10.20 Lockdown announced (Galeri to close)
In compliance with the latest Welsh Government guidelines, Galeri will be closed during the national lockdown period. The building will therefore be closed from 16:00 on Friday, 23.10.20 and we will re-open to the public from 09:00 on Tuesday, 10.11.20.

Thank you for your cooperation and please stay safe.

07.08.20 Update: COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Galeri

Galeri has started to re-open in stages. For further information and to answer some of your questions, please click here.

Stay safe

30.07.20 Update: COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Galeri

First of all, we would like to thank you for your patience and the numerous support messages since we closed our doors on Friday, 21.03.20 in line with the Government advice.

The lockdown period has of course been a challenging period for everyone. For us as a social enterprise we have lost a substantial amount of income overnight that is essential to run the company effectively and successfully. Galeri had previously been referenced to as having a strong and healthy business model, generating around 85% of our income commercially, however this pandemic had effectively wiped out a large percentage of that income. It is ironic that being quite self-sufficient as a company has seen us (amongst some other venues) feel the biggest impact, a major independent employer in the area with 50 staff employed. We are pleased to announce that we have been successful in an application to the Arts Council of Wales Stabilisation Fund that helps us in the short-term.

In order to try and secure our long-term future, we had no option but to furlough our staff. This has meant us not having staff answering calls/emails or online messages in accordance with the furlough rules.

When we are in a position to bring members of the team back into Galeri, we will contact all ticketholders (by email or telephone) to explain the situation with regards to re-scheduling, crediting accounts and refunds. We will also extend the gift-vouchers and PRIMA memberships. We kindly ask for your continued patience and we will be in touch as soon as we can.

Our reopening plans will be in stages based on the legislation set by the authorities and the viability of reopening activities:

Stage Date Intention
1 27.07.20 Re-opening to resident companies
2 03.08.20 Re-opening the Café Bar
3 TBC Re-starting the cinema programme
4 TBC Re-opening the conferencing/meeting facilities
5 TBC Re-starting the artistic programme (live events, exhibitions, Sbarc, workshops etc)

As we have been preparing to re-open, and in accordance with the guidelines we have been working on new operating systems to re-open as safely as possible to protect everyone.

Among the new systems in place are:

  • Staff training (on COVID-19 and the new systems in place)
  • Managing the number of people within the building at any one time
  • A one-way system is in place within the building (entry from Balaclava Road only)
  • Social distancing signage throughout the building
  • Hand sanitising stations can be found around the building
  • More frequent and enhanced cleaning procedures operated
  • PPE for staff and screens at certain contact point between staff and the public
  • Closing some toilet cubicles and sinks

When entering Galeri, we will be taking everyone’s temperature and some personal details. If you (or a member of your group) will have a temperature of 37.5ᵒc or higher unfortunately we will not allow you into the building. The details required on arrival (for “Test, Trace, Protect” purposes) are:

  • Name (of one member of the group)
  • Telephone number
  • Time of arrival/departure
  • Purpose of your visit

Café Bar systems and operations

As we re-open the Café Bar from Monday, 03.08.20, the main differences in place are:

Day Opening hours Last food order
Monday – Saturday 09:00 – 18:00 17:15
Sunday Closed Closed

We will continue to monitor, evaluate and adapt our systems in accordance with any changes in the official guidelines.

Thank you for your cooperation. Stay safe and we hope to see you in Galeri soon.

04.05.20 Galeri’s Event Schedule Update

Thank you to everyone who have contacted and supported us over the last week. We would like to publicly thank the staff, resident companies and the general public for their cooperation as we face a time of closure until the COVID-19 situation improves.

Once we will be allowed to re-open, our Box Office team will be in touch to explain the situation with regards to your tickets. We will offer credits or transfer tickets to the new dates (where possible). To the customers who currently have gift vouchers expiring between 17.3.20 and 30.5.20, we will extend these once we have a better understanding of the situation and re-open.

The table below shows the current situation in terms of the events we have managed to re-arrange, others that we are trying to finalise with some unable to be staged for reasons beyond our control.

Click here to view the table of events

With Galeri closed for the foreseeable future until otherwise notified by the authorities. All staff are furloughed and therefore emails will not be checked. Likewise, social media channels will not be monitored.

Please continue to follow the guidelines issued by the authorities – stay safe and look after yourselves.

17.03.20 Update: COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Galeri
In the light of the Government’s latest advice for people to avoid “non-essential contact”, we have taken the decision to postpone events for a foreseeable to postpone all events in Galeri.

Film screenings will continue until Thursday, 19.03.20 with all other events postponed from Friday, 20.03.20. he Café Bar will remain open from 09:00 – 18:00 (Monday – Saturday) and 09:00 – 17:00 (Sunday).

The health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, visitors, resident companies, artists and volunteers remain our priority.

As it stands, we don’t know how long this closure will last.

During this period of closure, we will continue to support our staff and resident companies. As an arts/entertainment/hospitality sector, we will also work with local and national partners to try and beat this challenging period together.

We ask for your patience as we try to re-schedule as many events as possible and issuing refunds. Our team will contact all ticket-holders to offer a transfer of tickets or refunds over the coming days. Please do not contact us, we have a dedicated team who will contact ticket-holders.

Please do your best to stay safe - and look after one another.

14.02.20 Anti-social behaviour in Galeri

Due to recent anti-social behaviour by various groups – it is with regret that as a company, we reserve the right to refuse entry of young people (under 18 years old) to Galeri if they:

  • haven’t got a ticket to an event;
  • are not paying customers in the Café Bar;
  • haven’t got a lesson within the building.

12.12.19 Galeri representing Wales at the UK Social Enterprise Awards 2019

We were delighted to be shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Social Enterprise of the Year” at the 2019 UK Awards ceremony.

The company has seen a huge growth in its services and offer since forming in 1992 with the initial aim of buying, renovating and letting properties within the walled town of Caernarfon. We now own over 20 properties in the town as well as running Galeri.

Since the opening of Galeri in 2005, the nature of the company has evolved in terms of the offer to the business model, employment as well as having a positive impact on the wider economy and the local supply chain. The opening of the cinema screens in 2018 has seen a huge increase in footfall within the building with over 250,000 using Galeri’s facilities annually.

As we look to the future, during the Summer of 2020 we will be opening Cei Llechi. This is a project in partnership with the Caernarfon Harbour Trust and will regenerate old, dilapidated properties – bringing life, vibrancy and purpose to the slate quay. The site will be home to 19 varied manufacturing companies who will produce and sell their goods within the units. There will also be 3 holiday lets (self-catering), a meeting room and a space to educate visitors of the importance of Cei Llechi linking Caernarfon to the international markets.

Having the recognition of our work and being shortlisted for such a prestigious award is an honour for us. We would like to thank the customers, supporters, suppliers, staff and board members for ensuring that the company has become what it is today and recognised further afield.

09.10.18 Confirming the films for the coming weeks…

ryan-goslingSince the opening the cinema screens here in Galeri, we have already welcomed over 2,500 people to see various films (this equates to over 10% of our annual target) in a space of just over 3 weeks and a half. Your support has been fantastic and it proves that there is a demand for such a facility here in Caernarfon.

The film programme up until Thursday evening, 25 October has now been confirmed. You can download a PDF version here or for further details, trailers and to book details – why not visit the dedicated wpage on our site -

We strongly recommend that customers pre-book tickets in advance for two main reasons. Firstly, to save money by buying tickets at a cheaper rate than on the day; and secondly – to secure your seats (as customers now book a specific seat for a film). Unfortunately, there have been several occasions where films have sold out and customers have been turned away – so please pre-book.

We also ask any customers who book a ticket for a 15 / 18 certified film to bring an ID/proof of age (whether a driving licence, Validate UK card, passport or copy of your birth certificate). The rules are not set by ourselves – this is the law – so we will not allow anyone who we believe are under age to attend a screening without a valid ID. With 12A certified films – a parent/responsible adult must accompany a child under the age of 12A. Further information can be found on the BBFC website by clicking here.

To book your tickets, you can:
Telephone us on 01286 685 222
- Buy online at
- Visit the Box Office in Galeri

Please ensure that tickets are collected at least 10 minutes before the advertised film start time (the time listed on the website states the start time of the film and not the trailers).

Rhys Ifans and Gwyn RobertsOn Friday, September 21st – Galeri’s new extension was officially opened by the actor Rhys Ifans.

The film programme can be found on this website – with tickets also available to buy online (tickets are cheaper in advance – pre-booking advisable).

We look forward to welcoming you and for your feedback.

Film start time:
All films will start promptly on time as advertised. Door open around 30 minutes in advance with trailers/adverts running 15 minutes prior to the screening time.

Select your seat:
As most cinemas – customers can book their specific seat(s) for screenings.

We would encourage customers to pre-book tickets in advance to secure your seat(s) and save on ticket prices. We also ask kindly if customers can ensure that they plan in advance to ensure enough time for parking/traffic and to collect your ticket(s) pre-film.

19.06.17 Appointment of Nici Beech as Galeri’s new Artistic Director

Galeri Caernarfon are delighted to announce the appointment of Nici Beech as the new Artistic Director.

The television executive producer and director, and former S4C commissioner, Nici is a familiar and hard-working member of the Caernarfon community – as one of the regular organisers of Noson 4a6 since 2004, Gŵyl Fwyd Caernarfon Food Festival and one of the founders of Gŵyl Arall.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Nici Beech as our new Artistic Director. Her vast experience of working within the creative industries and on a voluntary basis as one of the founders and organisers of several events in the Caernarfon area – including Noson 4a6, Gŵyl Arall and Gŵyl Fwyd Caernafon makes her the perfect person to develop our artistic programme for years to come.”

Nici will begin her new role in July.

23.03.17 Construction work on Galeri’s new 2 screen cinema extension to begin

imageWork on building Galeri’s new 2 screen cinema will begin next week. Costing almost £4m, the development will see Caernarfon have the only full-time dedicated two screen cinema in the area, and the programme will include the latest releases. The new screens will also free up Galeri’s 394 seat main theatre – currently split between theatre and film to develop the artistic programme- and bring in additional income through private hires and conferences.

Designed by Galeri’s original award-winning architect and recent winner of Channel 4’s 2016 House of the Year – Richard Murphy, Llysfaen construction company RL Davies will undertake the building work. Galeri have received funding support from the Arts Council of Wales Lottery fund, the Welsh Government (Vibrant and Viable Places scheme) and the European Regional Development Fund.

The existing programme in Galeri will continue and the construction work is not likely to adversely affect our existing operations. A new temporary public entrance will be built and used as the extension is being built. We are aiming to open the new screens in early Summer 2018

imageIn December, tender documents were published for a developer to carry out the work of building Galeri’s 2 screen purpose built cinema. We aim to start the work in February or March 2017 and open in 2018.

The opening of the new cinema in Galeri will mean that Caernarfon would be the only multi-screen cinema provision in Gwynedd and Anglesey. The development will also free up Galeri’s 394 seat main theatre to develop the artistic programme as well as growing the commercial use of the venue for private hires, conferences and weddings.

When opened, the 2 screen cinema programme will run 7 days a week and will include a variety of ‘on release’ titles, independent films and regular themed screenings.

08.09.16 Gwenfflam Caernarfon Alight: volunteering opportunities

As part of the 'Gwenfflam Caernarfon Alight' that will take over Caernarfon Castle later in the month, on Friday, 30 September a torch lit procession will leave Galeri at 19:00. The procession will leave Galeri at 19:00 towards the Slate Quay, led by 'Mr Wilson's Second Liners'.

To ensure that the procession is organised and run smoothly, we are seeking 80 volunteers to help us by carrying fire torches and stewarding. All volunteers must be 16 years old or older and available between 17:00 - 20:00 on the Friday.

There is also an open invitation for anyone who would like to assist children and young people of Sbarc-Galeri arts project in creating lanterns. The sessions are held weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays leading up to the event.

This is an opportunity to work on a large-scale event in Caernarfon and with the award winning Walk the Plank company to celebrate Wales' Year of Adventure 2016.

Because of the procession, there will not be a performance between 19:00 - 20:00 in the castle on Friday, 30.09.16.

imageThe development of a dedicated 2 screen cinema is a step closer following a planning permission approval by Gwynedd Council on Monday, 16 May.

Our aim is to be on site in January 2017 and to open in January 2018.
